another topic challenge awaits the players before they complete the episode.

“celebrities as politicians. Ie Jesse 'the mind' Ventura, Ben Affleck/Arnold thinking about running...or even Reagan. significant: sanctity of 'politicians'. concerns for the publicity rather than the people...publicity stunts.” –cybermolehost

“I, for one, adore Jesse Ventura. He's a 'man of the people' and really speaks from his heart - it's obvious in the speechs I've heard him give and things I've read. I guess it all comes down to the person - there's plenty of average Joe's that would be great in office and plenty of politicians who absolutely suck at it.” –annette

“First of all, there's an oxymoron in one of the above statements... the words 'sanctity' and 'politicians' don't often collide in the same sentence. Jesse Ventura. Talk about a guy who breeds controversy. I don't really pay a lot attention to Minnesota politics, so I can't really say if all the negative press he gets is deserved. I do think he's under more of a microscope than many other policitians because a) he's a former pro wrestler, b) he's not a politician by trade, and c) he's not affiliated with either one of the major parties. For something that's more close to home for me, I think of another pro wrestler and his attempt to win the mayorship of Memphis... Jerry Lawler. Living an hour from Mempho, I did pay attention to this race, and Lawler in particular. And to be quite honest, I believe he loves the city and wanted to do something to give back to the city that really made him the wrestling name he is today. Really, the two most famous people from Memphis would be Elvis followed by Lawler... and if you've ever spent any time there, you'll understand what I mean. In Lawler's case, as I said, I think it was a genuine attempt to benefit the city of Memphis. Now, as for other celebrities, I can't say... motives vary from person to person. Take Charles Barkley... he was talking about running for some office in Alabama. In his case, it was nothing but a publicity stunt. Why do I say that? When no one showed interest, he backed off. Had he been serious, that wouldn't have stopped him. Career politicians can have poor motives in running for office, just like celebrities can. It's something we've got to look at from person to person, rather than throwing them into one group and blanketing them with a label.” –john

“I think the idea of celebrities running for office is ridiculous. What's more ridiculous is that people actually vote them in. These people have no qualifications whatsoever. They're not even living in the same world as most of the general population. How can they know what's best for us?” –jason

““"How can they know what's best for us?" Honestly... how many politicians know, or care, what's best for the people? Not many of them act like it, that much I can say, and that goes for career politicians as much as the "regular guy" or even the "celebrity" who runs for office. Besides, how many career politicians are regular joes? I'd be willing to bet that at least 80% of them come from affluent homes, have Ivy League educations, and still have to pull that silver spoon out of their mouths (and their Johnstone & Murphy wing-tips) before speaking. The job of a politician should not be to know what's best for the people he/she serves; rather, the job of the politician should be to _listen_ to the people he/she serves. Unfortunately, this is the direction politics has taken over the years, and fault lies with both Democrats and Republicans. Anyway, my point is, I'd ten times rather have some in office who lacks the "qualifications" but acts as the voice of his constituents; as opposed to someone who is "qualified", and who _thinks_ he's qualified to make decisions because "Senator knows best". If a celebrity fits that bill, then I'm all for it.” –john
