challenge group 2:gina, larry, stephanie
"A mother is four times as old as her daughter. In 20 years from now, she will be twice as old as her daughter. How old are mother and daughter now?" –cybermolehost
"I think I have the answer child is 10 and mother is 40. In 20 yrs child will be 30 and mother will be 60 which is twice her age! If you guys think this is a trap and have another solution let me know. Post ASAP so we can get the to get our next question." -stephanie
"I think your RIGHT! But lets wait till Larry answers =)" –gina
"I would like to stay in the challenge I'm usually pretty good at problems like this one. I think that I may be able to add to the group alot in this challenge. I hope that you guys don't mind that I went ahead and posted an answer. We all seemed to agree and I thought that we should go ahead and get the next question as soon as possible." –larry
"the answer is correct. the daughter is ten and the mother is forty. you have answered one question correctly. before I can offer you the next puzzle, one of you must officially announce in a post that you will leave the challenge group. you may voluntarily leave, vote someone out or if no answer is decided by tomorrow at noon, i will choose for someone to leave the group and then you will receive the next puzzle." –cybermolehost
"If you do not hear from Gina by tonight I do not think she would mind ...just make a decision so we can get going." –stephanie
"Hey Gina if we don't hear anything from you soon, we will put you down as stepping out of the challenge." -larry
challenge group 3:jamie, jason, tine
"A butcher goes to the market with \\$100 cash. He has to buy exactly 100 animals. There are cows, geese and chicken for sale. A cow costs $15, a goose is $1 and a chicken costs $0.25. He has to buy at least one of each animal and has to spend all his money. How many of each animal did the butcher buy?" –cybermolehost
"ummm...I'm a mathematically zero, so this could be hard to figure out. Unless Jamie shows up and can help us out. I'll think about it tho, and see if I can come up with an answer. Unless ..this is a trick question, I am sure there can be many answers to this puzzle." -tine
"I've been playing around with a bunch of different possibilities, and if it is possible, there aren't many different possible answers. There can only be one answer. Also, I'm about 99% sure that Jamie is not showing up. So it looks like it's up to just the two of us to figure this out." –jason
"That's what I figured aswell..I thought I had it earlier, spent $100 but only had 99 animals. My brainscells are starting to boil, and I think I have refreshed my algebra from high school. I came up with this: 0.25a + 1b + 15c = 100 But I haven't got a clue how to solve it, or even if it's right. Besides, it might aswell be a trick question." –tine
"If you are stuck on a puzzle and want to go to the next, you may always ‘pass’ or give a guess. But remember if you pass or give an incorrect answer, you may not go back to the puzzle. But it may be beneficial...as you have two more puzzles available to solve." –cybermolehost
"What do you think Tine? Should we just guess something and move on to the next puzzle?" -jason
"I am 100% sure I have come up with the right answer: 3 cows, 41 geese, 56 chicken. It can't be a trick question - just add it up yourself, and the answer is 100=100 :oD" –tine
"congratulations have you solved the puzzle. now, who will leave the challenge group? have you decided yet?" -cybermolehost
"Who’s leaving? I suggest meself. I don't think I am up for another round of puzzle. This was exhausting enough as it was. Two good things came out of it tho: I know now that my brain works best in the morning and I can start brag about knowing algebra again (1, 2 and 3 unknowns, anyway) :oD" –tine
"tine has voluntarily left so it is up to both jamie and jason to finish the next two puzzles. Next puzzle: There are two lengths of rope. Each one can burn in exactly one hour. They are not necessarily of the same length or width as each other. They also are not of uniform width (may be wider in middle than on the end), thus burning half of the rope is not necessarily 1/2 hour. By burning the ropes, how do you measure exactly 45 minutes worth of time?" –cybermolehost
