interview with john

1: How does it feel being executed? Are you sad that you were executed? Did you feel that you might have made it to the end of the contest? Were you surprised that you were executed?
It sucks... plain and simple. To get this close and end up executed, to put the effort I did into this project and not make it to the end... it really feels awful. I thought I had a good chance to make it to the end, to be quite honest. I wouldn't say I was surprised I was executed, but I didn't expect it this episode.

2: Who do you think the cybermole is, now that you've been executed?
Whoever I say will probably be wrong. But with that in mind, I still think it's Annette. If it turns out to be Jason, I'm going to be disappointed, because I don't think he did a good job as the cybermole.

3: Do you feel that anyone had lied to you so that they can win the game or because they wanted to betray you?
No, not really. It's possible Larry did lie to me to get rid of me; and if he did, he played me like a fiddle and deserves credit for it. I'm certainly not going to be mad if anyone lied to me... I did it to others. That's the nature of the game.

4: Did you like the format of the game and the challenges? Were any of the challenges too difficult or unfair?
The format was great. I thought the challenges were very well thought out, very creative... a lot better than the challenges I see in other games. I did think some were too hard, though.

5: Who were your favorite people from the project? And why do you think that they are your favorites? Who do you think you'll keep in touch with after the game ends?
In no particular order, Larry, Dave, and Annette. I really liked Stephanie, and she may have been in my top three had she stuck around longer. I didn't get to know Jason all that well, but he seems like a cool guy. I hope to stay in touch with most of the players after the game ends.

6: Were there any moments when you felt that you couldn't trust anyone and when did that happen?
Yeah... like, all the time. I was the closest to trusting Larry completely, which may very well turn out to be my downfall. But other than that, no... I was always second-guessing, never taking anything at face value, looking for different meanings behind people's statements and actions.

7: Is there anything you would have done differently in the game
Good question. I can't really think of anything, other than maybe trying to get closer to all players instead of just a few.

8: Did the experience change yourself as a person and if so, how?
Not really, no. It was very disappointing to get so close to the end and not make it, but I'm used to dealing with disappointment.

9: If you were asked to be the cybermole, would you have done it and how would you have done things differently?
I definitely would have done it. I think I would have made such a big blunder early on, that it just screamed "bluff". Otherwise, I'd have looked for missions that could be sabotaged in a covert manner. I don't know... it's hard to say until you're actually in the situation.

10: Do you think that you had a advantage/disadvantage by not being in an alliance?
Not applicable :)

11: What was your strategy for playing the game?
Gathering information was my first objective. I took copious notes in the early going, just taking notes on certain things about each contestant. Of course, part of that was getting to know people as much as possible, which didn't always work all that well. Of course, I knew I needed to act quickly and form an alliance. I wanted to choose someone who seemed to be active and on top of things, and I think I made a good pick with Larry. After that, I tried to form false alliances with others and push them toward Larry as being the cybermole. As for test taking, my strategy was to never put all my egss in one basket. I played the percentages a lot, and I fully believe that's why I lasted as long as I did. On the last quiz, I did go straight with one person, and maybe that's why I got executed.

12: How do you feel about your fellow contestants and how would you describe him/her?:
  • Annette - A riot, but crafty. She'd always small-talk with you, but would never talk about the game in terms of suspicions. She's probably a blast to hang around in real life.
  • Daniel - Didn't talk with him any, but he was probably my least favorite contestant. Let's just leave it at that.
  • David - It's funny, because Dave and I are alike in a lot of ways. I really liked him and his perverted sense of humor.
  • Gina - She was tough to read, but seemed like a sweet girl.
  • Jamie - Never met him.
  • Jason - Smart and perceptive. I didn't talk with him a lot, but the guy made it farther than I did being a lot less active.
  • Larry - Great guy. Even if he used me and got me executed, he was great to work with... which is funny, because he and I are on opposite ends of the political spectrum.
  • Michelle - Couldn't tell you. As far as I know, it was the host :)
  • Stephanie - I liked her a lot. I was very surprised to see her go so early. She claimed to be a bit ditzy, and I'd have to say she's right :)
  • Tine - Although I'm not a fan of her lifestyle, I liked what I saw of her. She seemed to be very friendly and personable... just wish she hadn't have gone AWOL. She would have been a great contestant.

13: Who do you think will win the contest?
Jason. For him to be as scarce as he's been during the game, and still be alive at this point... the guy has to know something I don't. I really do hope it's Larry, of course... nothing against Jason, but he's the one I had the alliance with.

14: Did you ever try to act like the cybermole to fool the others? Do you suspect anyone of trying to act like the cybermole?
Actually, no... I never intentionally tried to act like the cybermole. I figure that, if I do enough things, I'll screw some stuff up and draw suspicion to myself. And I think that worked, because lord knows I screwed plenty of things up. I do think others tried to act like the cybermole... the main thing people did was probably just not showing up for challenges and the like, or atttitudes about the game.

15: What was your favorite part of the game?
The challenges were a blast, particularly the jailbreak challenge. It was a very enjoyable experience in general... nothing stands out as being the most fun, really. Maybe seeing the green thumbprint over my picture for the first seven episodes.

16: If you were given the opportunity to play the cybermole again, would you do it?
In a heartbeat. Where do I sign up? I hope this offer is serious.

17: How do you feel having been in an alliance but still not mastering the game and being executed?
Alliances don't work the same in an online game as they do in real life. The only real advantage you get from an alliance in an online game is the sharing of information. There was no way for Larry and I to isolate anyone, like Jim and Steven were able to do with Kathryn in the ABC version. The best we could do is gather and share as much information as possible, and hope our suspicions were accurate. So does it bother me? No, I think I played the game pretty well... just not well enough.

Thanks to john for giving some time to participate in this interview and I wish him the best of luck.
